X-rays can be generated with different energy levels. High energy x-rays are able to penetrate deep into the body, and are used to treat internal cancers. In contrast, low energy x-rays do not penetrate very deep into the body and transmit most of their energy into the skin and are therefore used for the treatment of skin cancers. Malignant mesothelioma is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the lining of the chest or abdomen. Malignant mesothelioma is a disease in which malignant cells are found in the pleura (the thin layer of tissue that lines the chest cavity and covers the lungs) or the peritoneum (the thin layer of tissue that lines the abdomen and covers most of the organs in the abdomen).

The Present Status of Radiation in the Treatment of Malignant Conditions. Pursuing these general principles, I have adopted the Countard method with some slight modifications. The cures which I shall illustrate will show that the percentage of cures in a number of most dangerous epidermoid carcinomas has markedly increased and that some conditions formerly considered hopeless have been. considerably with the different types of disease. Sarm. The treatment that has been adopted depends on the type of the disease. In rapidly growing forms, such as round-celled, mela- notic or spindle-celled growths, radium needles or tubes supplemented by deep X-rays without any cutting operation have given the best results.

This is the third five year report by the Holt Radium Institute in England and covers the period from tothe interval of total war. The year was not surveyed because of the interference with technic and the disturbance of the normal practice of roentgen therapy.

With modifications. The history of radiation therapy or radiotherapy can be traced back to experiments made soon after the discovery of x-rays (), when it was shown that exposure to radiation produced cutaneous nced by electrotherapy and escharotics — the medical application of caustic substances — doctors began using radiation to treat growths and lesions produced by diseases such as lupus.

As an active clinical worker with both radium and X rays I have come to have a very valuable appreciation of both these agents. It has also been possible to assess their value in certain classes of cases and to estimate whether the best result can be obtained from radium, X rays or surgery, or by a combination of these agents.

RESULTS The overall results for the whole interim sample are given in Table 1. The reason for this change of attitude is the result of recent work and development in the technique of handling radium and of applying it to the treatment of malignant disease.

It can now be stated that it has been proved indubitably that in a considerable number of cases undoubted malignant tumours have been observed to disappear after. The obvious precursor of radium therapy is X-ray therapy. Therapy using X-rays for skin conditions and diseases had already been demonstrated by the end of the nineteenth century, and unintentional skin burns had been observed.

Leopold Freund in Vienna is generally accepted as having been the first to use X-rays logically and scientifically.

The results of the methods which the author advocates are not presented in this volume. A discussion of the organization and staffing of a tumor institute and a report on the new horizons in radiotherapy are presented.

This book is a valuable contribution to the literature on radiotherapy.Professor Robert Briggs Wild had collaborated with Professor Schuster to provide treatment with X-rays and in became interested in newly discovered element Radium. He bought a small quantity of radium from Professor Schuster, and treated a few patients, finding that it had a similar effect to Roentgen Rays in treating superficial cancers. The treatment of malignant disease by radium and X-rays, being a practice of radiotherapy [Paterson, James Ralston Kennedy] on *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.
